This Song Made My Day

I came across this song on Facebook and needed to share it. The title is “Ani Yehudi” and the lyrics are simple and sweet and uplifting. To paraphrase “I’m Jewish – not better or worse than anyone else – just Jewish.” It shows the diversity of Jews all over the world and especially in Israel, and encourages our feelings of unity. Enjoy!

    I’d translate the song’s name as: I’m a Jew
My father, not at all religiously observant, was called “The Jew” when serving in the US Navy, WWII.

WBM, you may not be aware of the history of the song “Ani Yehudi.” I first posted about it in 2006, when I reviewed “T’nu Lanu Siman”, the CD by singer/songwriter Lenny Solomon on which “Ani Yehudi” first appeared. The original version was written by him, and, if I recollect, several friends whom he credits, on the CD liner notes, with contributing to the lyrics. (Unfortunately, most of the links in that post no longer work–I think Lenny’s moved most of his info to his Facebook page, leaving just enough of a website to enable us Luddites who are not on Facebook to place orders. But you can click here to listen to a snippet of the original.) My second mention was in 2010, when I published a post including links to the Hebrew-only and Hebrew-with-English-subtitles original studio version of the video. (Most of the singers and/or rappers are credited, in the studio version, with subtitles identifying them, but, for whatever reason, Lenny is not identified, presumably by his choice–he’s the bald-ish guy singing some high notes.) Do give it a look and listen–it’s very nicely done, indeed.

The good news is that Lenny is, in fact, identified in the video. (Blame my old eyes for having missed the caption.) The bad news is that the version with English subtitles seems to have disappeared. Or maybe I missed something. I did an Internet search last night and found only a version subtitled in Portuguese. Oh, well. If I can’t find English-subtitled version this weekend, I’ll e-mail Lenny Solomon at lenny@shlockrock.com and ask him whether he can republish it.
