“The Jews Have Gone Mad and Now Is Not the Time to Mess With Them”

Khaled Abu Toameh (one of the best reporters the Jerusalem Post has on its staff) gives his analysis here about why the areas in the west bank (Judea and Samaria) are relatively quiet. (I say relatively, since we have had specific warnings that the terrorists want to kidnap someone from our area, and how we should be extra careful about where to wait for rides).

He compares the differences between the Arabs in Gaza and those in Judea and Samaria, and explains things very well.

My favorite quote, which I think should be burned into the memory of every political leader in this country, is this:

“…the Jews have gone mad and now is not the time to mess with them”.

We are suddenly angry and unpredictable, and are fighting back, so now is not the time to start up.

In a word, “harta’a”.

    There’s a technical term that explains why the Arab Muslims in Judea and Samaria are lying relatively low for the moment – ‘darura’. If you visit Robert Spencer’s jihadwatch.org website and google ‘Hugh Fitzgerald’ ‘Israel’ ‘Arabs’ ‘darura’ you should find some interesting analysis that chimes exactly with what Khaled Abu Toameh has written.

    I’ll give you Mr Fitzgerald’s lapidary summary of Israel’s strategic situation, just to give you a taste.

    “Neither Israel itself, nor many in the outside world, seem willing to comprehend that there is no solution, one-state or two-state or n-state, to the Jihad.

    “There is only the matter of remaining overwhelmingly — and perceptibly — more powerful, capable of wreaking great damage on those who would attack.

    {my note: in other essays, he explains at more length that this means the Muslim leaders can invoke the principle of ‘darura’, or ‘necessity’; the intended target is just too powerful to assail, for the time being}

    “No treaty with Infidel states, and Israel is such a state, can conceivably be permanently honored by a Muslim signatory.

    “Pacta sunt servanda is a Western idea. In the Muslim world, treaties – if made with Infidels – are not to be obeyed, but to be violated, as soon as the Muslim side feels itself strong enough to press its advantage.

    “The model for all time — see Majid Khadduri, ‘War and Peace in the Law of Islam’ — is Muhammad’s Treaty with the Meccans in 628 A.D, the Treaty of Hudaybiyya. ”

    – Hugh Fitzgerald, writing on Robert Spencer’s jihadwatch website, 15.8.2006

    Thanks, dumbledoresarmy, I’ll have to check that out. I’ve been on jihadwatch (and I added the feed to my reader yesterday).

    And thank you, Westbankmama, for all your insightful coverage (? – not sure if coverage is the right term).
