It’s Time to Give Them What They Want

There was a horrendous terrorist attack last night in Jerusalem. A terrorist went into the main religious Zionist yeshiva (Mercaz HaRav Kook) and sprayed over 500 bullets into the crowd before he was killed himself. He managed to kill eight and seriously wound eleven. Some of those killed are as young as 15 and 16. (There is a yeshiva high school there too.)

This comes on top of riots around the country, and kassam rockets and grad missiles in the south.

The IDF’s beating in the last war in Lebanon and our turning a blind eye to the rocket attacks in the south has sent a very dangerous message to the Arabs – both “Palestinian” and “Israeli” (the terrorist was an Israeli citizen from east Jerusalem), that we are weak and can be beaten. By not using full force the Prime Minister has brought on more violence.

This lesson happens over and over again in this country. You cannot achieve peace by being weak. The only time Israel enjoys any quiet is after a war in which the Arabs lose – big. The problem is that after a while this peace brings with it complacency – and those whose memories are short claim that “making nice” (giving up territory, for example) is the solution.

Doesn’t work. Never has.

Right now the Arabs want a war. The international funding is drying up, and the terrorists in charge don’t like it. They know that the only way to start the faucet flowing again is to stir up the Arab world – and the best way to do that is to have pictures of Israeli tanks and war planes pounding Gaza. The Arab public is delusional, too, and thinks that we have been weakened so badly that we can be pushed into the sea.

Won’t work. Never has.

So they want a war. It’s time to give it to them.

After the smoke clears, and we bury our dead and they bury theirs, the international community screams about Israeli “war crimes”  – then the left wingers the world over will start pouring money into the coffers for the poor downtrodden Arabs. Maybe a few American Jews will be inspired to make aliyah (nothing gets the blood going like pictures of Israeli soldiers being buried).

And then we will have peace for awhile. Until the cycle starts again.

Don’t get me wrong, this cycle saddens me but doesn’t make me want to give up. Because I know that we are getting stronger all of the time. More and more people are coming to Israel and strengthening the country, and as badly as it looks on the outside we will never be defeated.

And pretty soon, I hope, Mashiach will come and stop the cycle altogether.
